How does Sandra Nettelbeck, “Mostly Martha” represent love and romance in the film? The love and romance are similarities shown through a mystery storyline that audiences aren’t expecting to happen. The two characters develop deep feelings with each other and switch a piece of the storyline. The storyline made up of the four main roles are sound quantity, narrative, lighting, and cooking.  
First, sound quantity plays an important role in this film through the background music. It expresses the character's emotions and body language. For example, the smooth music playing in the background while Martha and Mario taste soup brings to mind love and romance. 
A “narrative structure is a series of events related to one another in terms of cause and effect” ( Film studies pp32) the First scene of the movie is the voiceover of a black screen with the title of the movie. The middle is when Martha builds a relationship between her niece Lina and Mario. In the end, Martha realized she can’t imagine without Lina and Mario, so they went to Italy to get Lina and she quit her job. The narrative of “Mostly Martha” involves two characters that have a connection with each other. Lighting is a huge part of the film because, without lighting, the camera cannot take shots. Cooking and food are the main elements of this film. Cooking is how chefs make the food, and the presentation is how food is presented to people eating it.
What is the role of food in the film? There are many ways to represent food in a film. You can show your personality through the type of food you like and dislike to eat. Another way to represent the role of food is your own feelings. For example, Lina won’t eat Martha's dish but she will eat Mario’s. Even though her parents were of German and Italian descent, she prefers Italian food as Mario cooks. Food represents an important part of your culture in this film. Cultures have various tastes which are represented by different dishes and food. A culture is an art form of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively. 
 How does that relate to family, love, and romance? Family is a huge part of your life because, without family, you are lost. family is the whole package because you love them so much, you cannot live without them too. relates family, love, and romance because you are presenting someone your feelings, energy and time toward this one person. You can express your side of culture instead of food to this person. For example, Martha tried expressing her feelings toward Lina by presenting her with food she loved. Food can be one of many ways to relate to family, love, and romance and to symbolize a whole part of you.

Dr. McNichols, during her guest lecture on Like Water for Chocolate , discusses the  history of Mexico and Spain as it relates to traditions depicted in the book. During the film, two characters fall in love with each other, but their love creates a conflict between their families .
