Blog Entry #2 Reflection on the main idea of the “Power of Food and the Protestant Ethics”
What are the main ideas of the Power of Food and the Protestant Ethics? The main character in the film Babette’s Feast is the food and protestant and how it affects their religion and beliefs. This film is set during the late 19 century in Denmark. The location took place in a small Danish village. The main character from the movie is two sisters who lead a rigid life centered around their father. The main points from the movie are the civilization is various growing between protestant and food.
In the Danish village, there are protestant villages that believe in Christianity. The definition of protestant; “a member or followers of any of Western Christain churches that are separate from the Roman Catholic Church''. In the film, the village and the two sisters and everyone was wearing simple and plain colors like black and grey. Their religion every meal, they have a tradition of singing to God and their meal is always coffee and tea. How do the villages have enough money to earn their supplies on an isolated island? They are frugal about money because the church provided the amount of the total they earn. On the other hand, the food aspect will change the main ideas of the film.
The power of food can develop the villages of new unique experiences through the film. In the mid storyline, the two sisters take in a French refugee, named Babette Hersant. Babette is a woman who can help to work and serve the village. Babette is one of the improvements to represent how food is a power in the film. After Babette works and serves the village, she wants to offer to cook a French meal for the village to celebrate on the father 's anniversary of his birth.
The French food is a classy meal and is formal to represent in the villages. French Food is opposites from other countries' foods. Every country has its tradition of representing food, in this case, French Food is represented in the Danish village.
In Babette’s Feast, an example of the general had an experience of taste from the food and brought him unique flavors and how he acted towards the food while the village people copied his movements to try the French Food. The film proves to be an eye-opening experience for the two sisters and the villages. The effect of the food made everyone bring the community together. The main effects were reminiscing and memories to honor their leaders and made their religion stronger. The villagers gained new experience and made them happy.
